What problems have I encountered, what were the solutions?

This was a group project, one of the problems we faced was time. We planned to create three stick bridges for the ball to travel through but only had time for one. Our other problem was we didn’t have a place that correctly fits the size of the bridge, a place where one side connects to the wall or window and the other connects to the wall or window on an incline. However we couldn’t make a steep incline for the ball to go through and it instead resulted in a wave shape.

These are installation problems. To combat this problem we elongated the piece to fit by adding more string to the end, shifting the stick bridge more to the centre for the ball to sit on.

What will I do differently in the future?

Next time I would find a space for the bridge, measure the length and then construct the stick bridge according to the measurements. This way the bridge would work how it was imagined to perfectly.

This also taught me the importance of pre-making work to do before starting the installation. Professional artists measure the commissioned space before they construct or amend their art work. This makes sense on how, in the Tate Modern, Sarah Sze and Haegue Yang work fit beautifully into the space. The artists or curators chose the space for the works, it wasn’t random. This presented to me the great value of space and how to exhibit on the piece has, it changes how we perceive the work.

For example the tree human piece looked more alive as we installed the live sculptural performance outside among the tall trees, whereas if we installed the live performance in the classroom just dressed as a tree the value of the work would go down as the tree does not belong there.
